I used to love Alienware as it was my first gaming laptop back in 2010, but now that it’s long gone and obsolete, I went for their desktops and have since parted ways with that. Alienware makes slick-looking hardware, but their build quality and prices have been questionable over the last decade. I never thought I’d have them back in my gaming life with a monitor of all things. I wanted a 34″ ultrawide monitor with Gsync, and Alienware just so happens to have the best on the market right now. I sacrificed HDR for Gsync because I felt it was a little more important for PC gaming.

When I received the box in the mail, I didn’t realize you could park a car in it. Seriously, the thing barely fit into an SUV with the back seats folded down, and I was surprised to see most of it was foam to support this massively bulky and heavy monitor. Because of the Gsync chip and the vents on top, this monitor is the largest I have ever seen, and it weighs nearly 30 lbs. After assembling this beast, I plugged it in via DisplayPort (you can’t get a higher refresh rate without it). I immediately noticed the lighting zones, which are freaking beautiful. Alienware has always been known for its sleek lighting effects, and there are zones on the bottom and rear of the panel. It looks fantastic, but I noticed that they aren’t bright enough on the back to really see unless you stare at them, and the bottom one is more of a glow. It looks awesome, but you won’t really notice them if your monitor is up against a wall. The stand is designed for cable management, and I loved this as you can hide your cables behind the monitor thanks to the nifty design. The 3 USB 3.0 ports came in real handy and expanded my USB slots, so I didn’t have to run everything to the tower.

This monitor comes stock-clocked at 100 Hz, and you have to go into the monitor settings and overclock it to 120 yourself. It’s as simple as an OSD setting on the monitor and changing it in your display control panel. There are some other settings in the OSD, such as setting the lighting zones (which is painful here), displaying an FPS counter, various picture settings, response time, dark stabilization, and power saving. I didn’t really need to mess with anything, as it comes very well calibrated out of the box.

Once I started gaming, I noticed right away that Gsync was working. With Vsync turned off in games, you will notice how smooth turning the camera is, and for games that can reach 120FPS, it’s the silkiest gaming experience I have ever had. Of course, for games these days, you need a 2070 or higher to get anything FPS over 60 to notice the 120Hz kicking in, but the Gsync is well worth the price alone. With the monitor being curved the way it is, it kind of sucks your visuals in and keeps you focused. After looking at a flat monitor again, I noticed the difference right away and realized that curves aren’t just gimmicks.

While games look fantastic on this monitor, there are some issues that are serious gripes but not deal-breakers. The rear IO panel is thin plastic and doesn’t slide on correctly. I have never been able to make it flush with the monitor, and the tabs started breaking off. I also absolutely despise Alienware’s software, as they rarely update it and the AlienFX doesn’t work correctly. Every time I set a color scheme, it resets when the monitor wakes up or the PC restarts, and the presets do not work and save your settings. I have to constantly go in and reset the colors, so it’s too much effort, and I just left it in color spectrum mode. I then later found out that the Monitor Control Center is heavily outdated and you actually need Alienware Command Center to probably set the lights correctly. Because of the Gsync chip, the monitor gets really hot, and there’s a lot of heat coming out of the top of the vent. This is what is supposed to happen, of course, but you will notice a small room heat up a bit from it.

Overall, the Alienware AW3418DW is the best monitor I’ve ever laid eyes on, and there are so many reasons to spend the money on this thing. Sure, it’s a dream-level price for a monitor, but it’s a dream-level price for a reason. Gsync alone is well worth the money and helps free up frames that your GPU doesn’t have to worry about. Great cable management, cool lighting, a wide, crisp display, a 120 Hz refresh rate, 3 USB ports, and plenty of OSD options are nothing to sneeze at.

There are better keyboards out there, I won’t lie. However, if you have an Alienware computer, this keyboard is perfect. It mainly has to do with AlienFX. You can sync your FX with your laptop or desktop along with the keyboard; non-Alienware owners may not care for this. With that aside, this keyboard is great. The keys are nice and deep, the ergonomics are very comfortable, and the keys are fairly quiet. The design is just so appealing, but any keyboard has a few flaws.

Firstly, the keyboard isn’t separated into zones like the Alienware laptops are. There are only two: the keys and the media bar up top. I also hate that the alien head logo doesn’t do anything. I was hoping it would open the Command Center before I got it, but alas, it’s just a logo. There’s a dedicated mute button that sits above the print screen button and a gaming lock switch that disables the Windows key and menu key during gaming. Some may find this useless, but it’s there for those who need it. The big thing about this keyboard is the TactX keys. There are 18 in total. You can switch between three different profiles. With these, you can open programs, set weblinks, and set macros. There’s even a macro recording button! They are lined upright on the left side of the keyboard, which is a nice and neat line. The optional palm rest is really nice, and there are feet standing underneath as well.

The key placement is just perfect. I tested it playing Battlefield 3 and Max Payne 3, and I didn’t have to look down once. My fingers fell right on the keys they needed in the heat of the battle, and that’s the important thing. The keys are much deeper than most keyboards and even laptops, but it feels nice because you get responsive to feedback. While the complaints are minor, I would have liked to see other features, like an LCD screen of some sort for shortcut applications. For $80, you are getting a pretty sweet keyboard, but that may be just me being picky. You also need two USB ports; this may be a deal-breaker for some who are limited. Those with desktops probably won’t care, but laptop owners may. You need one for the lights and one for power.

Alienware fans should be perfectly happy with this board, and even non-fans can enjoy this thing. I just love the key placements and how nice they are to press. I haven’t had a keyboard this nice before. The software is simple and easy to use, and it gets the job done well. It also comes with a command center for non-Alienware owners.

It’s been 3 long years since my review of the Alienware M17x-R2 laptop. I love the thing, and it can still play the latest games, but it is starting to show its age. I wasn’t too fond of Alienware laptops because they used to be so expensive. Since their redoing of their entire lineup, they have become much cheaper over the years. With the new 14, 17, and 18 laptops and the Area-51 desktop being dropped for the X51, they have come a long way. They still offer the monster Aurora desktop, and maxing it out won’t cost you $6,000 anymore. The X51 is a console-sized, compact, small-form-factor desktop that is very affordable yet still offers a lot of power for gaming.

My specs for this setup are as follows:

GPU: Nvidia 2GB GTX 670

RAM: 8GB DDR3-1600Mhz

HDD: 2TB @7200RPM

That’s a pretty powerful rig for something the size of an Xbox 360. The chassis itself looks amazing. It’s all about the custom design; what sets gaming rigs apart from others is the chassis; the more unique, the better. The AlienFX slits on each side give it a sleek look. The beveled top and front plate make it look sleek. The rotatable alien head on the front gives it that extra little bit of uniqueness to set it apart from other rigs. There are plenty of ports here as well. 2 DVI and 1 HDMI, 8 USB 3.0 ports, surround sound hookups, a headphone and mic jack in the front, another HDMI port on the onboard chip, and a projector port. That’s a lot of ports in one small tower. While looks are important, performance is even more important, so let’s see how it stacks up to the most graphically demanding games today.

The game hovered around 15-20 FPS on these settings. That’s pretty much unplayable. You’re probably wondering why the GTX 670 can’t handle these settings, and it was from one simple setting: SSAA. At 4x, the scene is aliased quite heavily, and you need two cards to be able to handle the load. Once you drop it down to 2x, the frame rate shoots up to 35. On FXAA, the frame rate is even higher, but it looks a bit blurry. That’s pretty impressive, as Last Light is one of the most graphically demanding games out there, right next to Crysis 3. The 670 was obviously designed to handle stressful loads in DirectX 11.

That’s everything at its absolute maximum. I was getting the same frame rate as Metro at 10–15 FPS. Once again, it was the 4x SSAA. That is really for 2 cards to handle, but once I dropped it to 2, it went to 40 FPS. The game looks amazing, and the frame rate stayed pretty steady and didn’t jump around too much. If you turn off tessellation, the frame rate goes up to around 50 because tessellation is pretty demanding. Surprisingly, the TressFX will give you a 5–10 frame hit just for Lara’s hair.

Here’s another GPU-demanding game. Arkham City is one of the most tessellation-heavy games out there, and the 670 runs it like a charm. Here’s a game where you can run everything higher than GeForce Experience tells you. It says to put the anti-aliasing at FXAA, yet I can run it on 32X just fine with 60 FPS. This just goes to show the true power of the 670 and the 4770 working in tandem.

This is a game where, when it came out, you needed two GPUs to turn on Ubersampling. My 5870 on my laptop has a hard time running the game maxed out, even without Ubersampling. The game has a smooth 60 FPS with all the above settings; not a single hitch was seen even in huge open areas.

Another game where the anti-aliasing stressed the 670 a bit too much. Using Tessellation anti-aliasing drops the FPS by about 10; in fact, any high version of the AA drops the FPS by 10. Medium is by 5, and there’s almost no drop in low on any of the three AA options. You really need two cards, or a 680/690/Titan or 7xx series card, to get high FPS with those AA options. Everything panned out well, especially since the water tessellation kicks most cards’ butts, is very tessellation heavy, and the shadows can really bog down most cards. The 670 was able to run all this at around 40 FPS. That’s damn good for just one card.

During all this testing, the X51 stayed nice and quiet; I barely heard it. After 3 hours of steady gaming, I felt the back of the tower, and it was barely warm. That’s some damn good cooling in such a small space. This means you don’t have to worry about games crashing or shutting down from GPUs getting too hot or the CPU overloading with heat.

Alienware computers always come with their own awesome suite of software, the Alienware Command Center. Command Center 3.0 was launched in February and features AlienAdrenaline. Say you like drawing a lot, and you listen to music or your favorite YouTube playlist in the background. You can create a shortcut that will launch Photoshop, your playlist web link, your media player, and even change the AlienFX to match the mood with a single click. That’s really awesome. Adrenaline also has system monitoring in real-time and allows you to record it. Of course, AlienFX allows you to change the colors on your tower, but I was disappointed here. You can’t morph or allow pulsing like with the laptops, and the alien head marquee on the front isn’t a hard drive light. The light is on the back of the PC, and I like to know when my computer is active. You can change each side of the tower and the head marquee individually, but I would have liked more options available. On top of that, there’s AlienFusion, which allows you to change all your power settings, which is great.

In the end, the X51-R2 is the perfect balance between power and compactability, as well as price. The 670 is a very powerful card, and the 4770 is an awesome CPU. The 8 threads make a huge difference over the 4 thread quad-cores out there. If you want a pre-built desktop at an affordable price, the X51 is the way to go.

This game was a complete surprise to everyone. An old-school action game with 8-bit graphics that has a very weird story but is still fun and interesting? It can’t be possible! Well, it is because of the genius-level design and over-the-top perspective where special game mechanics were worked in. Enemies can shoot through windows, you can use doors to your advantage, and there are so many different weapons that the fun is endless!

The game is based on cheesy 80’s snuff films where you are a hitman that goes to different spots and just kills everyone in the building. The story is very weird yet entertaining; it doesn’t make sense, but it doesn’t need to. That’s how great this game is. You start out by picking an animal mask that you have unlocked, then you go in and try to clear the stages without dying. One hit and you’re dead in this game; let me make that very clear. You get a split-second window to kill someone before they kill you, whether they are facing you or not. If you are behind them, you get an extra split second, but you won’t clear a hallway before they shoot you. Enemies who have melee weapons are easier because they have to come toward you. The strategy is to see where the enemies are placed in each room and clear the stage accordingly.

It starts out simple, but you will see how addictive and fun it is when your character slices open a neck, smashes ahead into a carpet, or blows someone’s brains out. The second genius thing about this game is that you are punished for using guns, which makes the game very easy. Shoot someone, and every enemy on the level comes after you. You are to clear the rooms quickly, not quietly, which is the key here. There are a few different types of enemies, like dogs, which are really fast, and big, fat guys with scarves that can only be killed by gunfire. Save these guys last, so the entire level doesn’t come after you. A good strategy is to step out of a corner, hide again, and just stick out enough so you can whack anyone who walks by. This is another key strategy for winning the game.

The boss fights are really tough and require thinking outside the box to beat them. One enemy has two wild cats that come after you, a female ninja, and then he has two uzis that will pulverize you. You have to eliminate each one in sequence without dying. Remember, one hit, and you’re dead. Trial and error are very rewarding because it just feels good to clear a whole level without alerting anyone. The game is very fast-paced, so a level can be cleared in less than a minute or just seconds. Learning the strategy for each level allows you to get better scores.

You need to use combos to rack up scores, and gunfire is frowned upon in this game. Switch up weapons, use doors to knock enemies down, be bold and lure enemies around corners, and kill several enemies at once; it is all based on skill and not luck. This game just feels so good to play, and I couldn’t put it down. There are 18 chapters in this game, and in the end, I wanted more (hopefully DLC will follow).

There are some major issues that keep this game from scoring higher, though. When the game was released, it was nearly unplayable. Even now, the controller layout stinks; before, there wasn’t even controller support, and the keyboard and mouse controls are terrible. There are game-breaking bugs and glitches that don’t let you progress in the game, and while the music is pretty original, it repeats way too often, and you end up muting your speakers. The game should have just gone through some more testing or a couple more months of development before being released. Even now, there was a bug that kept me from advancing past Chapter 16. I finally tried it one more time, and I passed it—no idea how or why.

Hotline Miami is a fast-paced action game that has a genius-level strategy design. The graphics work very well for the setting, and the mechanics are just extremely solid. I just wish it was more stable and had better controller support. People with Alienware computers will get AlienFX support here, which is unheard of in an indie game. As it stands, this is one of the best games of the year.

Alienware continues to dominate as the top gaming computer brand in the world, with the fastest hardware on the planet. If you can afford the hefty price tag, you are in for a treat. If you already own a larger Alienware (M17 or 18x), then maybe it’s time for something more portable, but with almost as much power as the M11x. The M11 is Alienware’s answer to a netbook, done right with the speed of a gaming computer but the portability of a netbook. The R3 models have the second-generation I series processors as well as the new generation of graphics cards. The model I got had the i5 2537m, which runs at 1.4 GHz. Now you’re probably thinking that is slow, but it can run Crysis with almost maxed-out settings (high, not very high) at around 20–25 FPS. That is impressive. With the help of an Nvidia GT 540m, you are going to be smoking the competition on the go.

With 3D enabled, your portable experience just got a whole lot better with games, movies, and even on the desktop. The netbook can run everything in 3D without any horrible slowdown like older netbooks would. If you are used to the bigger laptops, a lot of the features have been stripped for portability, but this took a hit for me. There is no media bar, but everything is teamed up with the F keys using FN. I didn’t really like this, but they probably couldn’t fit a full-size USB media bar in there. There is no DVD drive, and there are only 3 USB slots. However, one is USB 3.0, and the netbook also comes with a firewire. If you really want more features, you have to think portability or more of a desktop, so this is for people truly on the go.

The screen is crystal clear with new LCD technology and a nice resolution of 1386×768. The speakers sound amazing with true surround sound built-in, and during testing, I could really hear a difference in sound with it on. The netbook also has a full touchpad, AlienFX, but unfortunately, a lot of the FX for bigger laptops were stripped from this one, such as the lid, alien head, and touchpad, and there are no individual settings for sections of the keyboard. However, the netbook does have a built-in graphics processor, so it can save battery life and not use a bigger GPU during regular use. While you can save tons of battery life this way, there is no way to remove the battery easily without unscrewing stuff.

If you come into the purchase thinking about portability, you will be amazed at what this thing can do. It strips away the desktop stuff of the bigger models while still packing in power under the hood. With great power-saving technology, long battery life, and a lightweight design (only 5 pounds!), you will really get your money’s worth.

Ever since I was young, I always wanted a PC that could run the latest games. Who would have known that today would be that day? The M17x is one of the most powerful gaming laptops (or laptops) available on the market. Alienware has always strived to provide the highest-tech and smoothest-running systems to date. This is well worth the $1800, so let’s get started from the beginning.

Out of the Box

When you get the box, it’s about the size of a desktop PC. This sucker isn’t light. Inside the box is another box with some collectibles such as a baseball cap, sticker, a leather-bound manual, the restore CD, and a resource CD, as well as a mousepad and the charger. The mousepad is very sturdy and wonderful to use, and the leather-bound manual is a nice touch.

Once you get that out of the way, the laptop has a nice soft cloth over the monitor, and when you pick it up, you almost drop it. This sucker is by no means portable, and you almost need a wagon to tow it behind you. Is it worth it? Yes, by all means, yes.

The laptop has a ton of ports, such as USB 2.0, Firewire, HDMI, VGA, ExpressCard, SD, and a ton more. There is something here for everyone, so you have tons of options for display purposes and peripherals.

Starting Up

Once you flip up the lid and look at the 17″ crystal-clear LCD display, you will notice the brilliant lights. Everything on the keyboard lights up, as well as the alien emblem on the top lid and above the keyboard. The whole thing feels sturdy, and the touchpad even feels nice to use. The keys feel great, and they are nice and big as well as quiet. There is a media panel at the touch to eject the disc, volume control, internet connection, Alienware control center, etc. The alien head emblem above the keyboard is actually the power button, and the eyes blink as the HDD light. The emblem on the lid will glow when the computer is in sleep mode, so you know what’s up. The emblem above the keyboard will glow in different colors to indicate that the laptop is charging as well. These are the slickest laptops I have ever seen.

Windows 7

I liked Vista, but 7 tops it all. With a faster GUI and a slicker design, Windows 7 is the ultimate gamers’ OS. You can now switch everything on the fly, such as taskbar management, theme switching, and pretty much everything. There are a lot of bugs and kinks worked out in Vista, and so far I’m happy with it.

The Alienware Control Center is very slick, with the coolest of all being the Alien FX. This allows you to change anything that lights up to the color you want. You can even have the keyboard cascade in different colors! There is an advanced editor that allows you to customize what the LED lights do, such as morphing into different colors (adding actions and looping is infinite), and there’s even an option to have the theme change when you open a certain program! Of course, the editor could have been more robust, but it’s exclusive to Alienware and will make all your friends cringe with envy. Alien Fusion allows you to deeply customize your power settings, and Alien Touch lets you customize your touchpad. Alien Sense is the facial recognition technology when logging in, and this can make you feel like a spy!

64-bit has a few issues, such as running some games, but it’s usually the game’s fault and not the OS. Coupled with the amazing processor speed, 7 runs like butter (or diarrhea?) without any slowdowns or hitches. I can have a game installed, play a game, then decide to minimize the game and check my email without much slowdown. Windows 7 Home Premium is amazing and the best Microsoft OS to date.

Games

Let’s get down to it. How do the games run? This laptop can trump any game you throw at it, even Crysis on Ultra settings. Every high-tech game out there can be played on the highest settings and range from 20 to 80 FPS, and that’s a triumph. The laptop runs really well under such stress and doesn’t really get too hot. The fans can be a bit loud, but it’s expected with this kind of setup.

The game sounds amazing with 5.1 capabilities, and even the laptop speakers will blow your hair off. I just wish there were some located near the monitor as well, since your arms can block the sound sometimes. The games also look super crisp with the HD monitor, so you’re in for one hell of a time.

There are a few games out there that just don’t support ATI hardware very well, like Batman: Arkham Asylum. It’s handcrafted for NVidia cards, so it didn’t run the smoothest on my machine. Dreamkiller just didn’t want to work at all, thanks to some sort of bug that kept me from playing. The first installation gave me white textures, and the second gave me frame rate pauses. A lot of other games run smoothly, and it just feels great to have a computer that can run these high-tech games.

The whole point of this beast is for gaming, and it does it well and goes above and beyond the call of duty to bring you a perfect gaming experience. Are there any flaws? Sure, as of right now, there is a nasty display driver glitch that makes you have to hard boot your computer every so often. The laptop should have come with a mouse, and there’s a lot of room below the keyboard, but this can be utilized for a mouse area and arm room. There is some fuzziness on the screen during certain games. The computer is great to look at and use, and it’s just so sleek and silky smooth. Is it worth $1,850? It’s worth more to me. I would probably pay over $3,000 for this baby.
