This is one award you do not want. Many games can be disappointing due to development hell, or just a lack of inspiration. Many AAA titles and beloved franchises have fallen to disappointing depths for many a reason. While many people may agree there were other disappointing games this year, to me they weren’t depression worthy of how utterly horrid they were.

Fallout 76

There were too many disappointing games this year, but Fallout 76 made me the most upset. I’m a hardcore Fallout fan and was so stoked at the idea of a Fallout MMO as on paper it seems like the next best move. Recycle assets, use a ten-year-old game engine, and shoehorn ideas that don’t work and you get Fallout 76. A buggy, boring, and lifeless mess that probably won’t be playable even after a year of updates.

This isn’t an achievement a game wants to get. This award usually goes to highly anticipated games or hyped up games, that was just terrible and highly disappointing when they came out. There was quite a few this year, but which one was the most disappointing?

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City

Oh boy, this game looked so good during development, a third-person squad-based shooter set in the RE universe. What could have gone wrong? Well, a lot. The aiming was bad, the story was bad, the characters were bad, the graphics were bad, and it just didn’t feel right. It didn’t feel like RE at all, but a low budget third-person shooter. The game tried to make ammo scarce to make it feel survivor horror-like, but you can’t do that when you make your game completely shooter based. It feels like the developers had never played a shooter or a survival horror before. Good idea, but a completely flawed execution.

The first thing that needs to be known is that the most disappointing isn’t the worst. These are games that were greatly hyped and had so much promised, but in the end, didn’t deliver any of it. These games are playable, but barely enjoyable, but also not really terrible either. There weren’t too many disappointing games this year, but the ones that were really made an impact this year.

Rage

Rage had such strong potential over all the disappointing games this year. It had the atmosphere, guns, and even the developer behind it…like the inventor of first-person shooters id Software and they managed to screw this up. The PC version got hit the worst with bugs and glitches that are so bad id won’t even bother patching them. The console versions saw some frame rate issues, but overall better graphics were promised, a fully open-world area to explore, and the game is very repetitive with a terrible ending. Rage put me down more than any game this year so shame on id.

The most disappointing isn’t exactly the worst. These games tend to be over-hyped and turn out just mediocre when they were claimed to be something amazing by developers.

Disney Epic Mickey

With a game that was supposed to be so amazing, and well, epic this game really was like a punch in the gut. With a bad camera, muddy textures, and poor combat and controls, Epic Mickey should have come out next spring with more polish. This just goes to show that a superb idea can fall flat.
