Available Exclusively On

  • 3ds

I have never been a huge fan of Dead or Alive outside of the characters. The fighting system is convoluted, overcomplicated, and not always explained very well. Dimensions breaks this barrier with a great Chronicle story mode that introduces these complicated techniques little by little so you can absorb them, and it works great. The story mode is entertaining, but nothing to write home about. You play as various characters trying to stop Alpha-152, which is Kasumi’s evil clone. DOATEC is trying to use this to destroy the ninja clan, Mugen Tenshin.

The fighting system is actually complicated, but after the story mode, you can actually use it. There are the usual combos of kicks and punches, but you can juggle opponents and stun them in a critical state. You can throw and hold opponents, and holding is kind of a counterattack. You can actually counter a counter in this game. If someone counters your attack with a hold, you can counter back or get out of the hold. Understanding how to do this takes some getting used to, but it adds some strategy to online fights. You can also do a super stun, which is called OKing an opponent, and this means they can’t counter. There are also special stances that the characters go into, which can be used to strategically add extra combos without the opponent knowing. You can also delay attacks in combos to kind of trick the other player into thinking you’re done, so they stop blocking.

The fighting system is fluid and smooth, with great animations and controls, but my favorite part is that the combos are listed on the bottom screen, so you can tap them or just use them as a quick combo list. This is really handy and actually makes playing the game more enjoyable, so you aren’t constantly pausing the game to remember a combo. On top of this, you can now tag teams, which is fun and adds some great combos to the fray. I liked the extra modes, such as tag team and infinite mode, and of course the showcase mode, where you unlock figurines to take pictures in 3D.

There are a lot of costumes to unlock to make the females look sexier or the males look cooler, and StreetPass and SpotPass are wonderfully integrated into the system. I’ll have my 3DS in my pocket all day when going out, then come home and have a few challengers ready to fight online that I passed when going out. I might even drive by a few SpotPass areas and come back with some downloaded costumes. Dimensions really utilizes these features, and I have a blast using them.

With all that said, the 3D effects are amazing and really show off the features of the system in this way, but overall, the graphics are smooth and crisp and look very detailed. I highly recommend Dimensions because it’s the best fighting game on the system right now.

2011 Game of the Year Awards — Genre — Best Shooter

Shooters tend to be the most criticized category because they are usually all the same and don’t do anything new for the industry. This year some awesome shooters and not all made it on the list. This year saw some shooters that pushed the graphics cards on PCs, showed some astounding multiplayer, but most lacked in good stories. That’s usually what is looked for in the shooter category is mainly a good single-player campaign.

Gears of War 3

This was a tough one but Gears 3 topped them all mainly due to a good single-player campaign and an amazing finale to an already wonderful story. The multiplayer may not be as groundbreaking, but it’s the overall cohesive and well-balanced campaign that put it at the top. With great characters to follow and some truly awesome weapons to shoot you just can’t put the game down, and that’s what you want in a good shooter.

Runner-Ups

Crysis 2

Killzone 3

Battlefield 3

Resistance 3

2011 Game of the Year Awards — Genre — Best Strategy Game

Posted by BinaryMessiah on 12/23/2011

Strategy games tend to be the best on PC, but with today’s technology, the game is tailored to the controller with ease. This year saw some great strategy games, but only a few really stood out from the rest. A great strategy game doesn’t so much as need a good story, but easy to use menus, lots of useful units, and a way to use them in a tactical and useful way. Upgrading and acquiring new units is key and also needs to flow and tie into the game.

Total War: Shogun 2

This was an easy pick mainly because it completely changes the way people thought about the last game, being this is a new game all on its own. With great units to use, tons of excellent DLC, and great visuals to boot Shogun 2 is a heavy hitter that stays true to the genre and that’s what put it on top.

Runner-Ups

Frozen Synapse

Anno 2070

Anomaly: Warzone Earth

2011 Game of the Year Awards — Genre — Best Fighter

This was a strong year in fighters with lots of great comebacks. What makes the top fighter stand apart is a great cast of characters, smooth and responsive controls, but most of all a great fighting system. Stories tend to take the back seat in fighting games, but online multiplayer is also important.

Mortal Kombat

Before you go off saying this won because I’m a die-hard MK fan stop right there. There have been past MK games that didn’t deserve the best fighting game. It wins this year because it is true fan service and brings the series back to its roots. This year saw a lot of remakes, but Mortal Kombat gives us great visuals, all the characters we loved from past games and brings it back its 2D roots which are when the game was strongest. Smooth and responsive controls as well as the great fighting system we grew to love, and a bevy of fun modes are what makes Mortal Kombat come out on top.

Runner-Ups

The King of Fighters XIII

Dead or Alive: Dimensions

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3

Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition

2011 Game of the Year Awards — Genre — Best RPG

Role-playing games tend to be heavy hitters but focus on the story and characters more than anything. A unique combat system is something that usually sets them apart, but nowadays the world you explore is also the character. There were some outstanding RPGs this year, and I wish I could choose more than one top contender, but they all deserve merits. This year’s RPGs saw some great world explore to explore as well as excellent characters.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

This was probably expected. The Elder Scrolls series is huge and the world of Skyrim is even bigger. With great visuals and tons of areas to explore, a great overarching story, fun combat, and lots of perks and ways to customize your character and level up it can’t be beaten. The music, voice acting, characters, and attention to ultra-fine detail is something that Skyrim offers that most RPGs can’t. This one will go down in history and will never be forgotten.

Runner-Ups

Catherine

Dark Souls

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings

Dragon Age II

2011 Game of the Year Awards — Genre — Best Puzzler

Puzzle games must have good puzzles, and that’s just to start. Usually, the puzzles have to be unique and have mechanics that differ from other games. This category didn’t see much action this year, but there were a few great ones. Every game this year created a unique way to solve puzzles, as well as deliver charming stories and characters along with them.

Portal 2

This really wasn’t a fair category this year. Portal 2 easily beats out anything else with its amazing characters, story, voice acting, and who can beat using portals? What makes it different from the last game is everything. Introducing new gels, a longer campaign, and varied environments make it a whole new animal. The game also featured super fun co-op multiplayer and just flowed perfectly with very creative puzzles.

Runner-Ups

Pushmo

ilomilo

Professor Layton and the Last Specter

2011 Game of the Year Awards — Genre — Best Platformer

Posted by BinaryMessiah on 12/23/2011

A great platformer must charm, be fun to play, and have some great mechanics. This year didn’t see too many good platformers, but the ones that were good were damn good. Most platformers have a problem being unresponsive, sloppy, or just not fun at all. Great controls, some very fun puzzles, challenging combat of some sort, and even a memorable story help.

Rayman Origins

Rayman won this year due to how beautiful, passionate, and charming the game was. Not only was the game chock full of smooth animations, fun combat, and a memorable story and characters, but it was a reboot of a franchise that has been doomed for almost a decade. Rayman will leave you smiling and wanting more when you’re done and that’s exactly how a platformer should be.

Runner-Ups

Super Mario 3D Land

Ms. Splosion Man

Outland

LittleBigPlanet 2

2011 Game of the Year Awards — Gere — Best Driving Game

Posted by BinaryMessiah on 12/23/2011
Posted in: 2011, Game of the Year Awards. Tagged: 2011, 360, apocalypse, awards, best, directx 11, dirt 3, driver, driving, f1, forza, game of the year, genre, Microsoft, motorsport, motorstorm, pc, playstation, playstation 3, ps3, racer, racing, san francisco, Sony, steam codemasters, xbox. 1 Comment

This was a year with a lot of driving games and a few didn’t make it on the list. A great driving game has a wide variety of cars, great physics and handling (especially if it’s a simulator), great tracks, and a fun multiplayer component. What sets the best apart from the rest? Perfecting or changing something in the genre that none of the others did. Most racing games tend to stick to what’s safe, but the best reaches out just a little bit further.

DiRt 3

What sets DiRT 3 apart this year was the fact that it improved on itself and added a lot of new things, but also was a solid racing game with great physics and cars. This was a close tie against Forza 4, but Forza didn’t improve enough on itself like DiRT 3 did. With the addition of Gymkhana, a whole new presentation style, revamped rep system, and tons of new cars DiRT 3 just new what makes a good racing game. With the addition of some DirectX 11 effects on PC, it also is one of the best looking.

Runner-Ups

F1 2011

MotorStorm: Apocalypse

Forza Motorsport 4

Driver: San Francisco

2011 Game of the Year Awards — Genre — Best Action-Adventure Game

Posted by BinaryMessiah on 12/23/2011

Action-adventure games are all about open worlds with great combat/fighting, lots of missions to do, variety in activities, and even customization is great. These tend to be the heavy hitters and one of the most revolutionary genres in gaming history. There were a lot of AAA action-adventure titles this year, and a few didn’t even make it on the list. Only one can win, though.

Batman: Arkham City

Arkham City may be a sequel, but it’s a sequel that does everything that a sequel should do: Make everything 100x better and introduce so much new content it’s a completely different game. Arkham City has a huge open world and allows you to really feel like Batman with investigation missions, smooth and fun combat, plus all of Batty’s gadgets. This is truly a beautiful and unique game, something that all comic books games need to model from.

Runner-Ups

Assassin’s Creed: Revelations

Saints Row: The Third

L.A. Noire

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception

2011 Game of the Year Awards — Achievements — Best Graphics, Technical

Posted by BinaryMessiah on 12/22/2011
Posted in: 2011, Game of the Year Awards. Technical graphics aren’t so much the art style, but what’s under the hood. Usually, games that introduce new engine or technology tend to be the best. This year was huge for DirectX 11 games on PC which can not be down on consoles. State of the art graphics cards are needed and a few games really showed this off this year. Usually, high-resolution textures, great modeling, lighting, water effects, weather, and other elements make up a good-looking game.

Battlefield 3

Were you surprised? Battlefield 3 was the only game to truly use DirectX 11 exclusively and completely left out DirectX 9 and 10. While the PC version only got this treatment the console versions looked pretty close. Battlefield 3 sported some amazing lighting effects as well as water and the textures looked real. Nothing really pushed graphics cards harder this year than Battlefield 3 so it takes the cake.

Runner-Ups

Crysis 2

Killzone 3

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings

Gears of War 3
