Sony HT-Z9F 3.1 Channel Dolby Atmos/DTS:X Soundbar

Manufacturer: Sony

Release Date: 03/14/2018

MSRP: $899.99

Just like TVs, sound systems are the only thing I upgrade with a TV. My last soundbar was the Samsung HW-K550, and it was decent at the time, but the subwoofer was really weak, and it has constant disconnection issues. Instead of buying an LG soundbar with my new TV, I went with Sony due to the lack of reviews for LG. I decided to spend the extra cash (like $500 extra) and get a premium, high-end soundbar.

f47fe683-88f4-405f-94b7-f02f1d25fc47._CR0,0,1464,600_PT0_SX1464__

Right, when you start setting this up, you start noticing the premium features right away. It looks more like a piece of furniture than some piece of tech sitting in your entertainment center. This soundbar actually has video output and has wifi, and you can go into the menu through the TV and set everything up. This surprised me, as I only had soundbars that had simple settings on the bar itself with the remote.

s-l1000

One of the best features of this soundbar is the vertical surround feature, which allows sound to pass over you and increases the depth of the surround sound immensely. There’s really no need to turn it off, and it doesn’t mess with the sound like other soundbars do. There are also plenty of media presets, such as games, music, movies, and news. Each preset is pronounced and works well without needing any adjustments. Another software feature is the integration with Alexa and Spotify. You can control Spotify from your soundbar and have a visual on-screen, but any smart TV does this as well, so it feels like a redundant feature.

6201448_bd

One thing I do have to mention is that DTS:X and Dolby Atmos cannot be transferred over Bluetooth or optical, so you must connect an HDMI cable for these features to work. Playing games and movies that feature Dolby Atmos sound amazing, and even DTS, or Dolby Digital Media, is crisp, and the subwoofer booms, which is quite nice. The overall sound fills the room and brings you front and center.

Overall, the HF-Z9F is a high-end soundbar that delivers every high-end sound technology available to date. With 4K and HDR passthrough, DTS:X, Dolby Atmos, Alexa support, and an actual video display, this is as high-tech as it gets right now. The Vertical Sound option brings the sound to you, and the overall sound fills the room. If you have the extra cash or want something more than an average soundbar experience, this is the way to go.

LG 65″ C8 OLED TV

Manufacturer: LG

Release Date: 02/18/2018

MSRP: $2,999.99

TVs aren’t something this household uses very often. With this being only my third TV in 10 years, I made sure I got what I really wanted this time. My first choice for a TV this time around was LG, as they seem to be ahead of the curve with OLED TVs, which are the next step for 4K TVs as they show clearer, deeper, and more vibrant colors than LED or even LCD, and the prices have finally come down to something reasonable. LG’s brand of TVs comes with “a” processors, which help process HDR and the webOS built into the TV. One thing I couldn’t stand with my last Samsung 4K TV I reviewed was the slow as molasses OS that was buggy and never really got updated over the 3 years I had it. Sure, it looked great for the technology at the time, but LG has a silky smooth OS and UI that just can’t be beaten by any other company right now.

The TV itself is actually the heaviest and bulkiest thing I have ever purchased, despite how paper-thin it is once you get it out. This thing has a very heavy base where all the main components sit, and the screen sticking out is nearly paper-thin. The stand was a bit complicated to put together as I had to YouTube it as LG’s instructions are pretty much useless, and this TV DOES require two people to unpack and set up or you will most likely damage something. It’s too big and cumbersome for one person.

So, out of the box, that’s something you will notice first: the amazing OS. This TV also comes with an awesome smart remote that uses motion tracking like the Nintendo Wii, so you can actually point and click at what you are doing, which is a huge step forward in smart TV interactivity. The TV recognizes most inputs when they are turned on, and you can customize each input with its own picture and sound settings, which is nice. One of the biggest selling points of this TV for me was the Dolby Atmos processing and Dolby Vision and HDR by Technicolor, which display the most vivid HDR picture I have ever seen on a TV. It’s truly stunning and turns heads for sure.

large_zoom04

I tested the TV out with an Xbox One X and a few HDR-ready games, and I was just blown away by the stunning colors this TV displays. They are so deep, rich, and vivid that it seems impossible that a TV can look this incredibly visceral. The TV has plenty of picture enhancement options for older content as well as the ability to turn it all off in the game mode and HDR picture modes. HDR is automatically detected, and the picture settings are actually perfect out of the box. LG is known for having the best-calibrate out-of-the-box displays, from TVs to monitors, and of the four LG products I have owned in the past, I can attest to this. I don’t have to mess with anything, even though I feel like I somehow have to. The options for calibrating are incredibly deep, with actual dark and bright room calibration picture profiles for professional calibrators. Most of us just have to choose the content we are watching and stick with that profile.

The TV’s speakers are surprisingly decent, with 40W speakers that are slightly bigger than the average 20W speakers most smart TVs come with, and it is equipped with Dolby Atmos built-in. The smart features of this TV are incredibly diverse, including being able to connect it to Google Assistant and Alexa, so the TV can be connected to either for smart home use. The content sharing and Bluetooth features are great for streaming to a smart device or listening to music off of your phone. There are just so many apps and features in this TV that it just feels truly like another smart device rather than a TV stuck in limbo like my previous Samsung TV that is slow and buggy and doesn’t quite have as many features as saying my phone would have.

large_zoom05

Overall, the LG C8 is a fantastically amazing TV and the best in its class, with maybe only Sony being able to come close to picture clarity and features. LG’s WebOS is a buttery smooth experience, the Magic Remote is a step in the next generation direction for interacting with TV menus, and the number of picture options will make a video nut blush. If you have the money to spend, just go for the best on the market.

Battlefield V

Publisher: EA

Developer: EA DICE

Release Date: 11/15/2018

Available On

Like so many countless games before it, Battlefield V tries to install the terror of war into the player with bombastic action sequences and dramatic, tense moments while bringing a visually stunning experience to the player’s home. Battlefield V does most of this well, but clearly, not enough time was given after Battlefield 1 to really flesh out the experience and make it something memorable.

The campaign follows the same design choice as BF1 with short War Stories, this time only 5, following various parts of the theater of WWII, from Norwegian tundras to the deserts of Africa. I really loved this idea in BF1, as it was a fresh take on a military campaign that was never done before. Here, the game follows this formula too closely and doesn’t evolve it at all. With pre-rendered cut-scenes shoved in, the game does little to offer interesting characters this time around or settings. The “open-ended” level design approach is abused here and detracts from the action that BF1 brought by forcing the player to use stealth in every single story.

I don’t want to run around a massive map trying to accomplish three objectives by infiltrating a small village or guard post by disabling alarms and stealth killing people just so I don’t have to fight it out. It makes for a more generic feeling, as there are few scripted events in this game. This happens in every story, with the first four abusing it the most. The best part of BFV is the raw shooting, as the weapons handle beautifully and are a riot to use as the authentic, accurate WWII weapons we have become accustomed to really don’t feel like arcadey pop guns anymore.

battlefield-v-exploding-building

The last war story is actually the best of them all, and I would have liked to see more of that one. You play as a German Commando, which is usually never done in these games, using a Tiger tank to fend off the Americans in one last stand in Germany. The characters are actually great, and the intensity is fantastic. I really felt the heat of war, and something about being on the losing side makes it that much more intense. The other stories aren’t as interesting and feel pretty bland outside of this final story.

Multiplayer has been expanded upon, but it is generally the same as before, with just a few modes added. 64-player Grand Conquest is probably the best here alongside Team Deathmatch, as the battles are intense and the tug-of-war aspect of these modes is addictive. Sadly, it just hasn’t changed much and rides too hard on the unique feeling BF1 brought fans and doesn’t carve its own path, which is surprising as this is a WWII shooter and not WWI. Maybe the uniqueness of the BF1 reboot forced DICE to bring out their creative effort, and after that, they just felt too safe bringing nearly everything back.

battlefield-v-pc-gameplay-a

The visuals are absolutely stunning and somehow top BF1 with amazing lighting, textures, and animations, and the sound is superb. This is probably one of the best-looking games of this generation, and you will need a hefty rig to run it right. Overall, Battlefield V is a fantastic WWII shooter that, while smoothing over the ideas of the last game, just doesn’t deliver the fun that counterbalances the authenticity of the era it tries to emulate. With a lackluster campaign and only the final chapter being interesting, and multiplayer that hasn’t changed an awful lot, DICE has got to bring something amazing with the next game, or gamers will quickly become fatigued with the franchise that has long stood its ground in a crowded military shooter era.

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

Release Date: 08/22/2017

Naughty Dog knows how to work magic, as every game in the series just pushes the boundaries of each system and what games can do visually. Lost Legacy takes what Uncharted 4 did and turns it up a notch or two with exciting action, fantastic animations and voice acting, and great characters, plus the visuals are some of the best ever made, period.

utll_launch_screenshot_06.0

The game follows two female protagonists, Cloe Frazer and Nadine Fisher, whom you already know from Uncharted 2 and 4. The game starts out a little more subtle than in other Uncharted games, where Drake is in some life-threatening situation that you have to bail out of. They take the storytelling approach, as this was a very entertaining and beautiful opening, and they slowly introduced the characters while ramping up the action. It’s one of my favorite uncharted openings, for sure.

During the nine chapters you play through, you can collect treasure, photo spots, and optional dialog, but it’s not very interesting. A lot of stuff from Uncharted is recycled, like the open driving area, shooting, weapons, and gameplay, so this actually just feels like an expansion rather than a sequel. One part of the game I did not like was the open driving area, where you have to activate three different levers to open a new area. It felt tedious and was mostly filler. The entire game is filled with fluff, like an area where you enter a cave, get stuck, and climb back out to go around the other way. It’s nearly a 10-minute gameplay session, and I just felt like it was there to extend game time.

https___blueprint-api-production.s3.amazonaws.com_uploads_card_image_570075_379507f3-ea72-4c62-a71b-fd6c5ed70dfd

The game is mostly set in the jungle, which I wish would have been in some more urban areas, like in the first chapter. The jungles got a little old with just rocks and green everywhere, as we’ve seen this so many times in previous games. I wanted the variety like in Uncharted 3 and 4. I also felt the puzzles were too easy, and I still cannot get adjusted to Uncharted’s shooting to this day. It’s always slippery and somehow awkward, like there’s something off about it all.

uncharted-the-lost-legacytm-20170813210124

Outside of the campaign, there’s a mission mode and collectibles, but the game may only be worth one more playthrough just to see the visuals and combat again. Outside of that, there’s not much reason to go back. Overall, Lost Legacy is a must-play for Uncharted fans, and it’s just one more game that proves the PS4 is the clear winner of this generation of consoles.

2018 Game of the Year Awards — Achievement Awards — Game of the Year

Posted by BinaryMessiah on 01/05/2019
Posted in: 2018, Game of the Year Awards. Tagged: awards, battlefield v, battletech, deliverance, forza horizon 4, game of the year, god of war, goty, kingdom come, marvel's, monster hunter, octopath traveler, red dead redemption ii, spider-man, super smash bros, ultimate, world. Leave a comment

This is always the hardest category for me to pick and I always spend weeks thinking about it. What makes a game better than all the others? Does it have to be revolutionary? One of a kind? Bigger than any other game? Not necessarily. GotY is usually for a game that exceeds expectations and feels solid, structured, fun, and memorable, and just stands out as a whole over any other game. This was a hard year to pick from as there were so many fantastic games that fell under these criteria.

God of War

It was really only a close call between God of War and Red Dead II this year with Spider-Man right behind them. This was one of those rare years where I had to analyze each and every piece of both games to determine the winner. They both have fantastic acting, characters, gameplay elements, and visuals. God of War however did most of this with more finesse and less experimentation. I felt the story of Kratos and Atreus cut a little deeper and I felt more attached and wanted to die to see the next cut-scene while Red Dead II was a really slow burn. The gameplay in God of War single-handedly reshaped combat for its own genre while Red Dead II just refined it. They both had large open worlds, but God of War’s was more memorable and had so much incredible detail that Red Dead just didn’t have.

Runner-Ups

Marvel’s Spider-Man

Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Octopath Traveler

Monster Hunter World

Red Dead Redemption II

Battlefield V

Battletech

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Forza Horizon 4

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune HD Remastered

Uncharted was one of those games that really pushed the boundaries of next-generation gaming. The visuals were out of this world amazing, the acting was top-notch, and the character was memorable. The game has some flaws, for sure, but most of these were fixed later on in the series. I did notice that the first game consists of more shooting than climbing, which was not obvious when I first played it on PS3 back in 2009, but it’s still a lot of fun just for the dialog and action alone.

maxresdefault

For fans of Uncharted, I will just say this: this is the definitive version of the game. It runs at 60FPS, which makes the gameplay so much smoother, and the textures and visuals are just smoothed over and given a polish to make them look clean. It doesn’t look nearly as good as the PS4 games or even Uncharted 2 or 3, but it’s impressive how well the game holds up today.

The shooting and cover mechanics work just fine as Nathan jumps around pillars and low-lying covers, but I never quite got used to Uncharted shooting mechanics; they just feel really slippery and somehow off. The jumping can get weird as Nathan does not catch ledges when you run off of them, like in later games, so he just falls off. There were times I restarted areas over a dozen times because I couldn’t figure out where to jump. The handholds and areas to go aren’t highlighted like in later games, so everything just blends in, and it makes it frustrating to progress and even explore because you don’t know what you can climb on.

uncharted-drakes-fortune-remastered-screen-08-ps4-eu-28sep16

While the story is decent enough and keeps you interested to the end, the Spaniards coming back to life as some sort of demon never sat well with me and was off-putting. Having this realistic treasure-hunting adventure turn into something from Hollywood was so weird, and I never liked that aspect. I also found the game extremely frustrating at times, with stupid difficulty spikes everywhere.

maxresdefault (1)

Despite all of this, Uncharted is not something I think I will ever go back to again, as so many things were fixed and improved in Uncharted 2 and beyond. The game isn’t really all that cinematic-like like later games, so there are no interesting things to re-explore. It feels more like an experiment at this point than the masterpieces the later games became.

While this wasn’t as strong of a year as 2016, there were quite a few awesome shooters this year. Any shooter fan wouldn’t be disappointed one bit.

Battlefield V

Battlefield V may seem too similar to Battlefield 1, but it’s still an exemplary shooter with visuals that push boundaries, fantastic multiplayer, and a great campaign with the years of expertise from DICE behind the game.

Runner-Ups

Far Cry 5

Prey: Mooncrash

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

Warhammer: Vermintide 2

2018 Game of the Year Awards — Achievement Awards — Best Atmosphere

The atmosphere in a game can be just as memorable as the story or be a character itself. Fallout 3 proved this as the Capital Wasteland was a character all on its own. A great atmosphere is something that can draw you in and make you feel a part of the world.

God of War

The atmosphere in a game is supposed to suck you into its world and make you feel exactly how the characters are feeling. God of War did this best with its cold and dark environments and massive scale levels that are out of this world. The beauty of this Norse realm was incredible to take in and each realm really made me feel like I was actually there.

Runner-Ups

Red Dead Redemption II

Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Battlefield V

The story is probably the second most important aspect of a game next to the gameplay. A good story can be memorable, impactful, controversial, enlightening, frightening, and any other emotion humans can feel. We didn’t have many games with memorable stories this year, but there were some out there that stood out.

God of War

There weren’t that many engaging stories this year, and there seems to be less and less every year, but God of War not only portrayed memorable characters, but the story Kratos goes through is very memorable and something you talk about long after the game is complete. Stories that stand the test of time are the ones that are remembered through history.

Runner-Ups

Red Dead Redemption II

Octopath Traveler

Vampyr

Marvel’s Spider-Man

Yeah, it's pretty damn awful. Notoriously one of the worst games on the PSP. A 4 was actually being generous.…
