2018 Game of the Year Awards — Genre Awards — Best Action-Adventure Game

Posted by BinaryMessiah on 12/27/2018
Posted in: 2018, Game of the Year Awards. Tagged: 2018, action, assassin's creed, awards, game of the year, god of war, goty, marvel's, monster hunter, odyssey, red dead redemption ii, spider-man, world. Leave a comment

What is an action game? Any game with action can be considered, but in my opinion, these are action/adventure games or games that are cinematic and full of flash and adrenaline-packed adventure.

God of War

God of War almost got overtaken by RDR2 on this one, but the combat system in God of War revolutionizes its own genre and just feels astoundingly perfect and insanely intuitive yet also very deep. The scripted scenes are also out of the world and the best ever seen in a game, you can’t beat the action here.

Runner-Ups

Red Dead Redemption II

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

Monster Hunter: World

Marvel’s Spider-Man

2018 Game of the Year Awards — Genre Awards — Best Driving Game

Posted by BinaryMessiah on 12/26/2018
Posted in: 2018, Game of the Year Awards. Tagged: 2018, awards, burnout paradise, driving, f1 2018, forza horizon 4, game of the year, goty, onrush, racing, remastered, wreckfest. Leave a comment

This was a decent year for racers as the two behemoths went toe-to-toe for the first time in years. Racers from nearly every series came out this year, but somehow didn’t quite make the splash we had hoped.

Forza Horizon 4

It doesn’t really get much better than Forza, and somehow, the game seems to just improve year after year and avoid the dreaded sequelitis. The visuals are out of this world, the game is actually fun, and the amount of cars to drive is insane. Throw that into an over the top open world and you can’t go wrong

Runner-Ups

F1 2018

Wreckfest

Onrush

Burnout Paradise Remastered

2018 Game of the Year Awards — Genre Awards — Best Puzzler

Posted by BinaryMessiah on 12/24/2018
Posted in: 2018, Game of the Year Awards. Tagged: 2018, awards, effect, friday the 13th, game of the year, goty, killer puzzle, lumines, old sins, puzzle, puzzler, remastered, sushi striker, tetris, the room, the way of the sushido. Leave a comment

The puzzle genre is always hit or miss every year. There’s never a slew of AAA puzzle titles in the works, so what we usually get are surprise indie games that usually make a big splash and sell fairly well. 2017 was not that year, but it wasn’t completely empty.

Tetris Effect

Tetris may seem like a weird choice for the best puzzle game, but when was the last time you played an amazing Tetris iteration? How about in VR? Tetris Effect is by far the best version in years and it doesn’t try to add a ton of features or modes, just quality over quantity and you can’t be mad at that.

Runner-Ups

Friday the 13th: Killer Puzzle

The Room Old Sins

Sushi Striker: The Way of the Sushido

Lumines Remastered

2018 Game of the Year Awards — Genre Awards — Best Strategy Game

Posted by BinaryMessiah on 12/24/2018
Posted in: 2018, Game of the Year Awards. Tagged: 2018, awards, battletech, frost punk, game of the year, goty, into the breach, strategy, the banner saga 3, valkyria chronicles 4. Leave a comment

What a weak year for strategy games. The usual big names like StarCraft, Civilization, and others are missing this year. There were a few great games, but they were so spread out I started to wonder if the genre died.

Battletech

Battletech wasn’t just the best PC game this year but the best strategy. It was a breath of fresh air in a genre that usually gets over-saturated with shovelware through the year. It hit all the marks that hardcore fans wanted and looked good doing it.

Runner-Ups

Frostpunk

Valkyria Chronicles 4

The Banner Saga 3

Into the Breach

2018 Game of the Year Awards — Genre Awards — Best Fighter

Posted by BinaryMessiah on 12/24/2018
Posted in: 2018, Game of the Year Awards. Tagged: 2018, awards, blazblue, cross tag battle, dragonball, fighter, fighter z, fighting, fighting ex layer, game of the year, goty, soul calibur vi, super smash bros, ultimate. Leave a comment

2017 was a somewhat weak year for fighters as some of the biggest names produced lukewarm sequels. With no Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat this year, we were left with some other well-known games in the genre.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Smash Bros. has always been a great fighting franchise, and this year is no exception. With Nintendo pouring all of their assets into one game, they were sure to big or go home. With dozens of characters and stages, Ultimate is the culmination of the series with nearly endless content and online play that just couldn’t beat this year.

Runner-Ups

Dragonball Fighter Z

Soul Calibur VI

Fighting EX Layer

BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle

F.E.A.R. 2: Reborn – 9 Years Later

Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment

Developer: Monolith Productions

Release Date: 08/27/2009

Available On

I never really got around to this DLC, and I was not missing out on anything. The DLC is about 1 hour long, and you play as a replica soldier who gets called to Paxton Fettel (I’m not sure if it’s a prison cell or just his soul in the epicenter of the nuclear blast from the first game) and has to blow through your own kind to get to him.

maxresdefault

The game mainly consists of large firefights that are actually quite tough (I died a few times here) with tons of enemies, mechs, and even a turret sequence thrown in. The game starts you out in a mech, and you go from there. It’s a short rollercoaster of every element created for F.E.A.R. 2, and it’s fun while it lasts, but a disappointing DLC as it adds nothing new to the game; even playing as a replica doesn’t change the gameplay one bit.

maxresdefault (1)

As it stands, play this just for the heck of it because you own it, but otherwise you can pass if you missed out all these years.

2018 Game of the Year Awards — Console Awards — Best Nintendo Exclusive

Posted by BinaryMessiah on 12/23/2018
Posted in: 2018, Game of the Year Awards. Tagged: 2018, awards, game of the year, goty, kirby, leg's go, mario party, Nintendo, octopath traveler, pokemon, star allies, super, super smash bros, Switch, ultimate. Leave a comment

This was one of the strongest console launches I can ever remember. For a first-year, Nintendo pumped out some fantastic games, as well as the strongest third-party support they have had in a decade. The system still has room to grow, but so far it’s impressive.

Octopath Traveler

The Switch had a good year but was mostly filled with more ports and remasters, and Octopath shows Square still love Nintendo and can make amazing RPGs. While the game still feels old-school, there’s enough story and great characters to keep you hooked for hours.

Runner-Ups

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Kirby Star Allies

Pokemon: Let’s Go Eevee/Pikachu!

Super Mario Party

2018 Game of the Year Awards — Console Awards — Best PlayStation Exclusive

Posted by BinaryMessiah on 12/23/2018
Posted in: 2018, Game of the Year Awards. Tagged: 2018, awards, become human, detroit, dj max, game of the year, god of war, goty, kratos, marvel's, playstation, playstation 4, ps4, respect, shadow of the colossus, Sony, spider-man. Leave a comment

This was a decent year for the PS4. With many older exclusive franchises being remastered for the system, plus some great new exclusives, the PS4 stood out from the rest. I would feel comfortable saying this is by far the best year for the system.

God of War

Sony ruled this generation, once again, due to the fact that they still know what gamers want and that’s beautiful well-told single-player games. God of War isn’t just the best game of the year on PS4, but the best game that’s come out this entire generation cycle. The acting, visuals, art style, combat, and characters are phenomenal and the bar has been reset for what video games should be.

Runner-Ups

Marvel’s Spider-Man

Shadow of the Colossus

Detroit: Become Human

DJ Max Respect

2018 Game of the Year Awards — Console Awards — Best Reissue

Posted by BinaryMessiah on 12/22/2018
Posted in: 2018, Game of the Year Awards. Tagged: 2018, awards, burnout paradise, dark souls, final remix, game of the year, goty, reignited trilogy, reissue, remake, remaster, remastered, shadow of the colossus, spyro, the world ends with you. Leave a comment

Reissues used to get a lot of backlash as being an excuse to release older games just to get some extra cash due to the lack of exclusives. As of late, re-releases have improved with developers putting their heart and soul to painstakingly recreate a game to look amazing and play with a more modern play style. We went from some extra cash to preserving history.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy

Like Crash before it, Spyro is recreated with love and passion that most other remasters don’t have. Somehow Spyro feels like a brand new game in 2018 with gorgeous visuals and all the fun from the previous games preserved.

Runner-Ups

Shadow of the Colossus

Burnout Paradise Remastered

Dark Souls: Remastered

The World Ends With You Final Mix

2018 Game of the Year Awards — Console Awards — Multi-Platform

Posted by BinaryMessiah on 12/22/2018
Posted in: 2018, Game of the Year Awards. Tagged: 2018, assassin's creed, awards, battlefield v, far cry 5, game of the year, goty, monster hunter, multi-platform, odyssey, red dead redemption 2, world. Leave a comment

This was a great year for multi-platform games. Exclusives were a bit dry, so many heavy hitters came out of the woodworks, so you were happy with any system you owned.

Red Dead Redemption II

Red Dead was the biggest contender against God of War this year and is a no-brainer for the best Multi-Platform game. The level of detail in this game hasn’t been seen since GTAV and has an unprecedented amount of love put into it. There’s no other game like this out there.

Runner-Ups

Far Cry 5

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

Monster Hunter: World

Battlefield V
